Riskiperimä -sarjan maalaukset olivat ensimmäisen kerran esillä Gallery Kalhama&Piipossa marraskuussa 2010. Maalausten lähtökohtana ovat valokuvakollaasit, joihin olen yhdistellyt elementtejä lehtikuvista, sotahistoriankirjoista poimituista kuvista, internetin kuvamateriaalista ja omista valokuvistani. Maalaukset eivät siis kerro mitään todellisista lotista ja sotilaista vaan ennemminkin omasta yrityksestäni kuvata ihmisen ja yhteisön tai roolin välistä ristiriitaa. Univormu edustaa minun maalausteni logiikassa kunniakasta velvollisuutta, toisaalta jotakin, jonka sisään on pakko onnistua puristautumaan. Onko univormu vapautus omista ajatuksista tai vastuusta, voiko sen taakse piiloutua? Minua kiinnostaa myös ihminen univormun takana. Ne, he, kuvien ihmiset olivat totta. Välillä he tuntuvat katsovan minua yhtä intensiivisesti kuin minä heitä.
Painting series Riskiperimä | Inherited Risk
The works from the Inherited Risk –series are based on photographic montages where I have combined elements from newspaper photos, images from military history, found material, internet imagery and my own personal photographs. In essence these paintings are not depicting anything ‘real’ about soldiers or Lotta-women. They are more an attempt – from my personal perspective – to represent the disparity between the private and public roles that we carry.
According to my painterly ‘logic’ the uniform illustrates both the glorious duties of individuals and similarly the overwhelming expectations that we meet in life. Does the uniform free its wearer from her own thoughts and responsibilities, can a person hide inside it? I’m interested in the people inside the uniforms. The persons depicted are real. Sometimes I feel that they look at me with the same intensity that I look at them.

Olen käsitellyt Suomen sankarillista sotahistoriaa tyttöjen näkökulmasta, vesivärimaalauksen keinoin. Talvisotaa on kuvattu yleensä rintamalla olleiden miesten näkökulmasta. Hyvinvointi-Suomen kasvattama kuvataiteilijanainenkin kuitenkin ”muistelee” sotaa mielellään omasta Suomi-satu –näkökulmastaan.sarjasta Talvisatu | from series Winter Fairy Tale koko vaihtelee | size varies, watercolour on paper (2005-2007)
Talvisodan henki
Miten ymmärtää ja käsitellä sotaa kun on itse nähnyt sitä vain kuvissa? Talvisodasta selviäminen on minulle osa myyttistä Suomi-kuvaa. David taisteli reippaasti ja ovelasti Goljatia vastaan! Suomen armeijan varustelutaso oli puutteellinen ja talvi oli paljon kylmempi kuin tavallisesti, paikoin lämpötila laski alle -40 ˚C. Mutta suomalaiset sitkeät sotilaat hiihtivät lumisissa metsissä tulipalopakkasessa parrat jääpuikkoja kilisten ja kun olivat saaneet puna-armeijan tankit motitettua, tuhosivat ne kylmäpäisesti viskelemällä Molotovin cocktaileja tankkien sisäänmenoaukot täyteen niin että silmissä vilisi. Kansakunta yhdistyi vuoden 1918 sisällissodan aiheuttaman kahtiajaon jälkeen, oikeisto ja vasemmisto ja metsän eläimet puhalsivat yhteen hiileen isänmaan vapautta puolustaessaan.
Osaltaan talvisotaan ja siitä selviämiseen liittyy ”talvisodan henki”, jonkinlainen tiivistymä suomalaisten itseensä liittämistä hyvistä ominaisuuksista ja asenteista. Talvisodan hengen kaikuja saamme vieläkin kuulla kun meitä yritetään taivutella johonkin epämiellyttävään. Taistelussa työttömyyttä vastaan tarvitaan talvisodan henkeä! Suomen armeijaan ja kotirintamalla reippaasti miesten työt tekeviin naisiin liitettiin positiivisia sankarillisia ominaisuuksia. Yksilöllisyys, taitavuus, tehokkuus, sopeutuvuus, uhrimieli, taistelutahto ja sisu auttoivat pientä Suomea vaikuttamaan kohtaloonsa. Myös tietty ilottomuus taitaa vieläkin kuulua tähän taisteluhenkeen.
Painting series Winter Fairy Tale
I have dealt with the heroic Finnish war history from the perspective of a girl and with the means of watercolours. Typically the Finnish Winter War has been described from the viewpoint of men that took part in the action. However, as a female artist raised in the Finnish welfare state, I’m tempted to “revisit” the war through my own fairytale version of it.
The Spirit of the Winter War
How can I understand and come to grips with a war that I have only seen in photos and on film? The survival of Finnish independence through the Winter War is for me a part of the mythical story of Finland. A case where David eagerly and cunningly fought against Goliath! The level of war materials of the Finnish army was remarkably low and winter was much colder than normally, with temperatures at times dropping to below minus 40° C. Regardless of the conditions, persistent Finnish soldiers skied in the snow-filled forests in extreme conditions with icicles clicking in their beards. When they managed to circle Soviet tanks, they calmly destroyed them by throwing numerous Molotov’s cocktails into the exhaust gas openings of the tanks. The Finnish nation was once again united, setting aside the troubles and division caused by the Civil War of 1918. It was the Right and the Left, with the help of the creatures of the forest that came together in order to defend the freedom of the Fatherland.
Central to Finland’s survival in the Winter War was the idea of “the Spirit of the Winter War”. It is a kind of crystallization of the positive elements and attitudes Finns attached to themselves. We can still hear the echoes of the Winter War when we are asked to do or perform something unpleasant. When fighting the unemployment we need the Spirit of the Winter War! Both the soldiers of the Finnish army and the brave women at the home front – who took care of men’s work – were depicted with positive heroic characteristics. Individuality, skills, efficiency, flexibility, sacrifices, fighting spirit and stamina helped the tiny Finland to shape its destiny. This spirit is even today partly coloured by a certain puritanical joylessness.
